About Doyle Brunson

Name Doyle Brunson
Current Residence Las Vegas Nev.
Born Aug. 10, 1933
Birth Place Longworth Texas, US
Don't deal Doyle Brunson out just yet. The legendary poker pro is still making news, winning games and hoping to claim an 11th World Series of Poker bracelet. Retirement, Brunson says, will come when he quits winning.
Born August 10, 1933, in the midst of the Depression
marked cards in Longworth, Texas, the man who later would become known as "Texas Dolly" was just another farm boy in a town of 100. Early on, Brunson found a niche in athletics. After winning the Texas State Championship in the mile run and landing a spot on the all-state basketball team, Brunson was fielding offers of athletic scholarships from colleges across the United States. In the end, he chose Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene because it was only 40 miles from his hometown.
There, he studied education and was drafted by the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers. Though a knee injury - which persists to this day - sidelined Brunson's career as a professional athlete, he completed his studies and graduated from university with an MBA in administrative education.
Meanwhile, Brunson helped pay for his education by playing poker games at colleges around Texas. By his account, Brunson learned the game quickly and used his observation skills to cash in. After graduating from university, Brunson took his one and only day job selling office equipment. His first paycheck seemed so paltry compared to his poker winnings, Brunson quit and became a professional player. That meant going underground.
At outlaw games, Brunson had to contend with police, cheaters and robbers; he once saw the player next to him shot and killed, and has looked down the barrel of a gun during an interrupted poker game.
In 1960, Brunson met Louise, the woman he would eventually marry after several years of courting and convincing her it would be fine to marry a professional gambler. Early in their marriage, Doyle was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his throat and the prognosis was grave marked card tricks: Doctors gave him several months to live as the tumor was spreading quickly toward his brain.
Ever the gambler, Brunson chose to try a risky surgery as his last hope. When all was said and done, he was pronounced cancer-free. The news couldn't have come at a better time as Louise was pregnant with their first child and Brunson needed to head back out on the poker trail to start earning money for his family, which quickly grew to include two daughters, Doyla and Pamela, and son Todd, who is also now a professional poker player.
Brunson continued to support his growing brood playing and winning on the poker circuit, where he eventually met his mentor Johnny Moss as well as future partners Amarillo Slim Preston and Sailor Roberts. The men toured Texas, winning big money and earning a reputation for being nearly unbeatable high-stakes poker players. The trio eventually disbanded after losing their six-figure bankroll in Las Vegas, but Brunson hadn't lost his love of poker.
After wearing out his welcome in Texas, Brunson packed up his wife and their four children and moved to Las Vegas where poker was legal. By 1976, he had won his first World Series of Poker title, which he followed up with a second win in 1977. The two championships have forever branded the 10-2 Hold'em hand a "Doyle Brunson" because he took both championship games with a full house - tens full of deuces.
Brunson made his mark again in 1978, by penning the book Super/System, considered a definitive guide to poker. Since then he has also authored Super/System 2; a book of memoirs; and a book about the greatest hands he's ever seen.
In 2005, he earned his tenth World Series of Poker bracelet, a record he shared with Johnny Chan.
Solidifying his place in poker history, he also has a World Poker Tour event in his name. The Doyle Brunson North American Championship is the main event of the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio, where Doyle is often seen playing in the biggest cash games around. The championship is the second largest tournament by entry fee on the WPT with its $15,000 buy-in, second only to the $25,000 WPT Championship.
Success at the tables and legendary status haven't kept Brunson from expanding his horizons as well. He owns and endorses an online gaming site, DoylesRoom.com, which made headlines in 2006 when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced it was investigating the operation.
Now well into his golden years, Brunson is as busy as ever and, by his account, still winning more than he loses. From humble beginnings to one of the most influential forces in poker today, Brunson means it when he says, "A man with money is no match against a man on a mission."

Trivia

  • Holds 10 gold WSOP bracelets, a record he shares with Johnny Chan
  • Won his first two World Series of Poker events with a 10-2 hand
  • Drafted as a young man to play for the Minneapolis Lakers, a former NBA team
  • Has nearly $5 million in tournament winnings
  • Authored Super/System, often called the poker bible

10 More Essential Hold’em Moves: The Isolation Play

There’s no simple fix for becoming a winning poker player but there are a handful of simple, easy-to-execute poker moves that can make a world of difference to your bottom line.
By fine-tuning these tactics you’ll have more tools to put to work at the poker table. You’ll be able to better understand your opponents and how to manipulate them, and that will translate directly to money in your pocket.
We already wrote the book on the 10 Essential Texas Hold’em Moves and now we’re back to bring you 10 more.
Today we’re exploring the isolation play, a move that can narrow the field when you’re in a hand and increase your chances of taking down the pot.
In certain situations you don’t want to play marked cards a multi-way pot so by isolating one player in particular you can give yourself a better chance of making the best hand or using position to win the pot post-flop.
The What: While there are a few different reasons to make an isolation play the basic mechanics are the same. An isolation play refers to re-raising an opening raiser in order to push the other players at the table out of the pot, thus isolating only the player against whom you want to play.
Phil Ivey
Players like Phil Ivey understand that sometimes it's better to be heads-up.

The Why: By pushing the rest of the table out of a hand you will a) have a better chance of winning the pot by making the best hand by showdown or b) be able to use position to take down the pot after the flop.
The Where: Using the isolation play against a shortstacked player is most commonly used in tournaments while isolating limpers and maniacs can be used in both tournaments and cash games.
The When: Like most poker moves the isolation play works best when you’re in position.

Isolating the Right Way

Since there are a few different reasons for using the isolation play it’s extremely important to understand the situation, your opponent and why you’re trying to isolate him or her.
The basic concept behind the isolation play has to do with reducing the variables in the hand as much as possible so you’re better able to control the outcome.
The more players in a hand, the more likely someone’s going to flop a big hand or get creative with a bluff after the flop.
By isolating just one player you can take control of the hand and increase your chances of winning the pot.

Isolating Shortstacks

The most basic isolation play is used in tournaments when one of your opponents is dangerously low on chips and desperate to double up or pick up the blinds and antes.
Imagine you’re on the button and the player in cut-off is very short (six big blinds). Action folds to the cut-off who moves all-in.
Chips
Give yourself better odds of winning by isolating shortstacks when they move all-in.

You know this player to be competent, and not one to let himself be blinded out of the tournament. You know this player is willing to take a risk with marginal cards in order to pick up the blinds and antes.
You look down at A-J and must now decide how to proceed.
If you just call, the blinds will have very good pot odds to call with marginal hands (for example the big blind will have to call five big blinds for a chance to win a pot of 20 big blinds).
And as we said before, the more easy cards tricks players in the pot, the harder it’s going to be for you to make the best hand by showdown.
To put it in practical terms let’s say the shortstacked cut-off shoved with K-Q and the big blind is sitting with 5-6 suited.
In a heads-up pot against the cut-off you have a roughly 60 percent chance of making the best hand by the river. If the player in the big blind enters the pot, however, your chances of showing down the best hand drop to 35 percent.
Figure out the odds yourself with our Poker Odds Calculator.
By three-betting instead of calling you price the big blind out of coming along with a speculative hand, allowing you to go heads-up against the shortstack who is shoving with a very wide range.

Isolating Maniacs

In the previous example we were using the isolation play to increase our chances of showing down the best hand, but the same play can be used to isolate an overly-aggressive player, allowing you to use position to win pots after the flop.
Imagine you’re playing a $1/$2 cash game and the player to your right is raising way too many hands and generally playing very loose.
You know he can’t have a premium hand every time he comes in for a raise and since you have position, you can use his aggressive style against him.
The next time he raises you look down at pocket fours. It might be tempting to just call and try to flop a set but since you’re only going to flop a four one in eight times, the vast majority of the time you’ll be forced to fold to the aggressive player’s continuation bet.
Gus Hansen
Proceed with caution when trying to isolate maniacs who play well.

Another problem is that if you just call, it’s going to drag other players into the pot behind you who will have the correct pot odds to call with other pocket pairs, suited connected and other speculative hands.
By three-betting you will push those same players out of the hand and allow you to go heads-up against a player who’s out of position and playing a very wide range of hands.
Any two unpaired cards will miss the flop two out three times which means the majority of the time your opponent will be forced to fold when you continuation bet the flop.

Isolating Limpers

Using the isolation play against weak players who limp too much uses the same basic concept as isolating maniacs.
Since limpers are usually just trying to see a cheap flop with marginal hands, you can raise in position even if you don’t have a premium hand. Most of the time the limper will just fold but when they do call it’s usually a mistake.
One of the biggest beginner leaks in poker is limp-calling too much out of position with marginal cards.
And since limping too much is generally a sign of a weak player, you should be trying to play as many pots against them as possible, especially when you’re in position.
So next time you identify a player as limping too much consider raising. Hopefully the rest of the table will fold and you’ll either win the pot preflop or go heads-up in position against a weak player which is always a recipe for profit.

7 Card Stud Rules and Game Play

Before community-card games such as Hold'em and Omaha became popular, the most widely played poker variation was Seven-Card Stud.
Even now Stud is regarded as a more "pure" poker variation, as much for its historic past as its increased difficulty of play.
Seven Card Stud requires more attention and card-playing prowess, along the lines of Bridge or Gin, than a community-card game.
This is not to say that Stud is any better than any other variation, but it is a game worth knowing how to play. Every poker marked cards player should have the ability to play multiple variations of the game, and Seven-Card is one of the most popular and important.
The game of 7 Card Stud can be played with two to eight players at a table. The goal in Stud is the same as any other poker variation: win as many chips as you can, one pot at a time.
Stud has a lot of little rules and a few quirks, but it's a simple game at its core. The game can be broken up into four sections:
  • Setup
  • The Bring
  • Betting Rounds
  • Showdown
If you've just read the Texas Hold'em Rules and Game Play article, you'll notice that Stud has one more section. For players familiar to the rules and game play of a community-card game, the only completely  new concept you'll learn in this article will be "the bring."

Setup

The first thing you need to do is get everyone at your table some chips. You will need a combination of chips that will allow for a big bet, small bet and an ante.
The size of the bets will dictate how large your game will play. A big bet is typically twice the size of the small bet, with the ante around 10% of the big bet.
Here's a chart of buy-ins and bets to give you some ideas. The buy-in amounts are the minimum amounts you would want to buy in for the stakes. If you want to be sure to have lots of chips, play with smaller stakes for the buy in - for example, use the bets for a $10 game, and buy in for $20:
Recommended Buy-in Big Bet Small Bet Ante
$100+ $4 $2 50¢
$20+ $1 50¢ 10¢
$10+ 50¢ 25¢
Once you all have chips, one player needs to grab the deck and shuffle up. It doesn't matter who starts as the dealer in a Stud game.
Betting Rules: Stud can be played in a variety of different betting structures. This article uses the most common structure: Fixed Limit. To learn about other various betting structures, head to this article (there will be another link at the bottom of this page):
  • 7 Card Stud Betting Rules: Limit and More
Once the cards are shuffled, all players must ante. Antes are dead money, meaning they go immediately into the pot: any bets you make will be in addition to the antes.
Starting with the player on the dealer's left and moving around the table clockwise, the dealer deals every player two cards face down (all cards face down are known as as down cards or hole cards), followed by one card face up (this card is known as the door card, or window card. All cards face up are collectively known as up cards or show cards).

The Bring

Crammin and jammin!
Why not learn at the table?

In every form of poker, there is some determining factor as to how and where the action starts in the hand. In Hold'em or Omaha the action starts to the left of the big blind; in Stud it starts with the bring.
The player with the lowest-value door card is the one required to "bring it in." Here's what you need to discern the losing player for the bring:
  • All cards are worth face value and face cards are valued from worst to best: Jack, Queen, King.
  • Aces are high for the bring, which means they rank higher than a king.
  • If two cheat poker players have the same value low card, suits are used to determine the loser.
  • Stud uses poker-suit ordering, alphabetic from worst to best: clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades.
The player required to bring has two choices. They can either bring by making a bet equal to the size of the ante, or they can complete the bet to the full amount of the small bet.

Betting Round One (Third Street)

The player to the left of the bring is next to act. That player has three options:
  • Fold: They pay nothing to the pot and throw away their hand, waiting for the next deal to play again.
  • Call: They match the amount of the bring.
  • Raise: If the first player made a minimum bring (only brought the amount of the ante) a raise will be completing the bet to the amount of the small bet limit. If the first player completed their bring to the full small bet a raise would be doubling the small bet amount.
For example in a $20 game:

Min Bring
Player 1 brings 10¢
Player 2 can call 10¢ or complete to 50¢.
Max Bring (Completion)
Player 1 brings (completes) 50¢
Player 2 can call 50¢ or raise to $1
Play moves clockwise around the table one player at a time. A betting round ends when two conditions are met:
  1. All players have had a chance to act.
  2. All players who haven't folded have bet the same amount of money for the round.

Betting Round Two (Fourth Street)

Once the first betting round has completed, the dealer deals every player (always starting at the first live player to his or her left and moving clockwise around the table) one card face up, next to the first face-up card.
In this betting round, and every betting round to follow, the first player to act is decided by the value of the show cards. The player with the highest value show cards acts first. The value of show cards are ranked in the same order as poker hands.
On fourth street, with only two cards showing, the best possible hand would be two aces showing (A A to be exact). The worst possible hand would be 2 3. Any pair is better than any two non-paired cards; for example 2 2 is better than A K.
Suit ranks are used in the event of a tie for the highest-ranked show cards. When evaluating rank by suit, the value of the hand is determined by the suit of the highest ranking card. For example:
Player 1: A K
Player 2: A K
Player 1 has the better hand since the Ace of spades is of higher rank than the Ace of hearts.
Example 2:
Player 1: 3 3
Player 2: 3 3
Player 1 wins, since they have the Three of Spades, which is a higher ranked card than Player 2's Three of Hearts.
Once you have discerned the highest hand, that person acts first. They have the option to check (wager no money, and move the action to the player on their left) or bet the small betting limit.
The action moves from that player clockwise around the table one player at a time. Each player has the option to:
  • Check (if no bet has been made).
  • Call (match any bet made).
  • Bet/Raise (If no bet is made, they can bet the small limit; if a bet has been made they can raise it by adding an additional amount to the bet, equal to the small limit).
  • fold (throw away their hand).
Once every player has acted, and every player that has not folded has put the same amount of money into the pot, the betting round ends.

Betting Round Three (Fifth Street)

At the completion of fourth street, the dealer deals every remaining player another card face up, starting with the first live player to his or her left, moving clockwise around the table.
Once all the cards have been dealt, the betting round starts the same way fourth street started. The player with the best show cards bets first. Three of a kind is the best combination, followed by a pair, followed by the highest cards.
Dario Minieri
Live Stud's a slow game for the online player.

In this betting round, players bet using the big betting limit. Other than the size of the bets, this betting round is identical to fourth street.

Betting Round Four (Sixth Street)

Sixth street is identical to fifth street. Every player is dealt one card face up, and the highest valued show cards bets first. On sixth street, with four show cards for each player, the best possible show card value is four of a kind.
Sixth street betting uses the big betting limit.

The Final Betting Round (Seventh Street)

When the sixth street betting round is complete, the dealer deals one final card FACE DOWN to every player. Again, the dealer starts at the first player with cards to their left, and moves on clockwise around the table.
The player with the highest-ranked show cards in the previous betting round is the first to act in this betting round as well. The final card having been dealt face down does not affect the value of the four show cards.
The final betting round uses the big betting limit.

Showdown

Once the final betting round has been completed, the players still in the hand enter into the showdown. In the showdown, each player makes the best five card hand possible out of their own seven cards.
The remaining two cards are "dead" and have no value towards the hand at all. They are never used to evaluate the strength of a hand.

Evaluating Hands

Here are the rules for evaluating the winning hand:
  • The poker hand ranking order can be found here. (there will be another link at the bottom of this page) There are no exceptions to this ordering, a flush always beats a straight, and three of a kind always beats two pair.
  • There are no other hands used in Stud than the hands listed in this chart. For example, having three pairs is actually only "two pair" with the highest valued two pairs making your hand.
  • Poker hands must be exactly five cards and only those five cards are used to evaluate the winning hand. For example:
    • if the player holds 2 J Q K A 10 9, the player's best hand is a straight: 10 J Q K A
  • If all remaining players have nothing, no pair or anything stronger, the winning hand is the hand with the highest valued single card. meaning:
    • A 3 4 6 7 is a better hand than K Q J 9 8
    • A J 9 8 6 is a better hand than A J 9 8 2
  • Suits are never used to evaluate the strength of a hand. If two players have the exact same hand (disregarding the suits of the cards), the pot is split between the players.
Once you have discerned the winning hand, that player is awarded the pot. After the pot has been shipped, all players ante and are dealt their next hand. Unless you have a professional dealer, typically the role of dealer will rotate around the table, although it is not necessary for Stud.
Having one player as the dealer for the entire duration of the game will give no player an advantage or disadvantage during the game.

Random Rules

Fourth Street Open Pair: If a player pairs up their door card on fourth street (giving them a pair as the winning high hand for fourth street), the player has the option of checking, betting the small limit or betting the big limit.
If the player chooses to check, the next player to act inherits the same options (meaning they can check, or bet either the small or big limit).
If a player chooses to bet the larger betting limit, all bets and raises in that betting round must be in the  big betting limit unit. For example in a $10-$20 limit game, if a player is dealt a pair on fourth street, they can bet $10 or $20.
If they choose to bet $20, the next player must fold, call $20 or raise to $40.
Capping the Bet: In any one betting round while there are three or more players still in the hand, there can only be one bet and three raises. Once the third raise has been made, the betting is "capped," meaning all future action in that betting round is restricted to calling or folding.
Running Out of Cards: If you are playing with eight people, it is not possible for every player to be dealt a full 7 cards, since there are only 52 cards in the deck.
If you ever get to the point where all eight players are in the hand until seventh street, instead of dealing every player one card, you must deal a single card face up in the middle of the table.
This card is used as a community card (like in Hold'em or Omaha). Every player shares that card as the seventh card of their hand.

Choosing High-Quality Poker Cards For Your Home Game

Whether you love to play Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Euchre, Omaha Hi/Lo, Bridge, Canasta or any other popular card game, playing cards is a popular pastime for many people. But you can’t play with just any cards. You’ll want to invest in a set of high-quality poker playing cards. Good playing cards are important for any avid poker player, they’re SO much easier to play with, and there is nothing better than shuffling a new deck of cards. It would be silly trying to save an insignificant amount of money on cheap cards that will inevitably make the experience that much less enjoyable.
The cheap quality playing marked cards cards are not very visually appealing, and are made of regular paper, so you’ll be lucky if they last for a few months before they start looking very shabby. If you want your playing cards to last longer, you can buy Copag or KEM cards. Both KEM and Copag brand of playing cards are amongst the top brands in the world. Both are 100% plastic playing cards and offer very similar benefits.
KEM and Copag are highly durable cards and can last you for a long time. They are quite bendable and jump back into shape without leaving a crease. Both KEM and Copag are also quite washable, so if you spill your cola on them it doesn’t mean the end of the card deck. The design on them also fades less easily. Overall, making it difficult for people to identify cards, which is the key for a long lasting deck.
In terms of looks, the print on Copag Playing Cards (Jumbo Index) are less sharp than KEM Playing Cards (Jumbo Index) which are very well defined and wider to make holding them a lot more comfortable. They come in similar designs and there is hardly any difference. Playing with 100% plastic playing cards means they are very smooth and for someone used to playing cards made from paper it can mean some spilling while shuffling the cards before they get used to it. Although many prefer the smooth finish and feel and the ease of dealing, a little amount of roughness is desirable. In this regard Copag cheat poker playing cards are a bit rougher and feel more like paper cards than
KEM playing cards.

You can buy Copag Playing Cards for around $7.5/deck which comes out to be cheaper than KEM Plastic Playing Cards which you can buy for around $12.5/deck. As of now, KEM playing cards made by the United States Playing Card Company are more popular and well known than Copag playing cards. However, you will find many card enthusiasts (including poker professionals) vouching for the superiority of the Copag brand over KEM.
Overall there is little to choose between them for a casual player. And indeed if you play very occasionally (less than once per week) or really don’t care about marked cards that much then save yourself some money and buy a cheaper brand of playing cards. If not, the only way to decide is to actually use both cards and decide based on preferences.
But when all is said and done, although buying playing cards to play in home games is great, sometimes nothing beats the thrill of playing at the best poker sites online. If you are looking for a good poker site to play on you should take a look at www.buymarkedcards.com, as it has a solid list of poker room options, plus other useful online poker information. It can be a lot more fun taking money off of strangers, and you can play in higher stakes tournaments or cash games then you would normally if you’re used to only playing in small home games.

Macau Commute Cheat Sheet

Going to Hong Kong soon? Then make sure you take a side trip to the bustlin' country of Macau (It's only an hour away by ferry boat), where you can have an interesting tour of this then Portuguese colony. You ‘d find it weirdly familiar to see and hear Spanish words, just like how they are loosely inserted in our daily conversations here in the Philippines.
Take for instance the Senado Square. Senado is a word that you will hear almost every single day in the Philippines, thanks to (or blame it on) the Spanish settlers who influenced and colonized the country for more than three centuries. The Senado Square is central tourist attraction from which you can walk to other different historical spots in the country.
How to get there? Once you dock on the Macau Ferry Terminal, just proceed to the bus stop and board a bus that will pass through the Senado Square. From there, you can stroll to different directions and discover sights such as the following:
  • Ruins of St Paul. What was once marked cards the largest Catholic church in Asia is now only a front façade where you can take a photo and revel at the artwork featured in it. Make sure that as you walk to and from it, you taste and purchase local delicacies such as beef and pork jerkies.
  • Museum of Macau. Although not a huge museum, it provides a concise and interesting take on the history of the country.
  • Lou Kau Mansion. Take a glimpse at how the then richest Chinese business owners lived by touring the Lou Kau Mansion.
  • Sto Domingo Church. Does the name sound familiar? This church features a fusion of Baroque and Filipino styles of architecture.
There are a lot more other historical spots that you can stop by as you walk around. You'd probably take half a day of touring, so you'd have enough time to go to other places in the afternoon, perhaps after taking your lunch. You may take a cab or a bus to the following must-sees tourist spots:
  • Macau Tower. Take your photo with it in the background, or go inside for some afternoon cocktails.
  • Taipa Village. From urban, go back in time by visiting the old Taipa Village, where you can stroll through alleys paved with stones and experience unique dining experiences in the local hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
  • The Venetian. Care for some gambling? The Venetian houses the world's largest casino (yes, it's not in Las Vegas), so get ready to spend some cash. Just make sure you set a spending limit for yourself.
Tips and Tricks:
Just like Hong Kong, Macau is a very tourist and commuter-friendly place. Don't worry and just have fun.
You can hop on and hop off the free shuttles provided by Macau hotels and casinos, even though you're not a paying customer.
  • It might be hard to hail a cab in Macau. The buses are great alternatives! Get a map and check out the bus routes and schedules for your convenience.
  • You don't have to exchange your Hong Kong dollars to the local currency, as merchants and other establishments accept Hong Kong dollars for payment.
Make your Manila to Hong Kong flight worth it by taking that side trip to the beautiful country that is Macau.

Macau tour: 10 Macau attractions you just have to visit !

Macau has a reputation as the Vegas of the East and, indeed, millions of visitors come every year to the city's glitzy casinos.  But the former Portuguese enclave has more attractions to offer than just Baccarat tables and slot machines… From impressive baroque-style cathedrals and old Chinese temples, to adrenaline-boosting bungee jumps and beautiful nature walks…

This article will take you through 10 key attractions you really have to try and see, when visiting Macau
1)     A-Ma Temple is where Macau presumably started from. Built against a rocky hill in front of the strait that separates Macau from mainland China, this 1488 temple was constructed to commemorate a miraculous event where the legendary goddess A-Ma saved a group of seamen from a storm and brought them safely to shore.  Years later, when Portuguese explorers asked locals for the name of the place, they were answered "A-Ma Gau" (Literally, the Bay of A-Ma), and that's who the name Macau eventually came about…
